In a world that often seems divided by borders, ideologies, and interests, there is an ideal that calls for unity, empathy, and collective action. On December 20th we celebrate International Human Solidarity Day, it’s a reminder that we are all interconnected members of the global community. This day encourages people worldwide to come together to address common challenges and promote a shared vision of a better future for all.
With a year marked by environmental crises, social inequalities, and corporate accountability, the significance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting cannot be overstated. Let’s take a look into the essence of International Human Solidarity Day, emphasising the pivotal role of ESG reporting in promoting sustainable development, nurturing corporate responsibility, and contributing to a more equitable world.
The Origin of International Human Solidarity Day: On December 22nd 2005, The General Assembly by resolution 60/209 identified solidarity as one of the fundamental and universal values that should underlie relations between peoples in the twenty-first century, and in that regard decided to proclaim 20 December of each year International Human Solidarity Day. The resolution emphasised the importance of eradicating poverty and promoting human development in a spirit of solidarity, as well as the need to create a global community united by common goals, shared responsibilities and nations in their efforts to build a more sustainable world.
Key themes
Poverty Alleviation
One of the central themes of Human Solidarity Day is the eradication of poverty. Solidarity calls for joint efforts to create inclusive societies where everyone has access to basic needs such as food, education, healthcare, and shelter. Through collaborative initiatives, we can work towards building a world where no one is left behind. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a framework for international efforts to combat poverty. Goal 1 specifically aims to "end poverty in all its forms everywhere" by 2030. Achieving this ambitious goal requires collaboration among governments, NGOs, and the private sector, along with the active participation of individuals around the world.
Environmental Sustainability
In the face of climate change and environmental degradation, solidarity urges nations to come together to protect the planet for current and future generations. Upcoming standards such as ISSB and CSRD, show collective action is essential to address the environmental challenges that transcend borders, emphasising the need for sustainable practices and responsible stewardship of natural resources. ESG reporting has emerged as a crucial tool for organisations to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable and responsible business practices.
Global Health
Recent global events have underscored the importance of international solidarity in addressing health crises. Human Solidarity Day highlights the need for collaboration in healthcare to ensure that everyone, regardless of location, has access to quality medical care. This includes mental health. Many different stakeholders across the world are taking steps to address mental health concerns. Firstly, governments, organisations, and communities are working to improve access to mental health services, aiming to make them both affordable and readily accessible. Additionally, a multitude of organisations are extending a helping hand through helplines, online resources and support groups; all of which offer guidance and assistance to those grappling with mental health challenges.
International Human Solidarity Day serves as a reminder that our shared humanity is the foundation upon which a better world can be built. By embracing solidarity, we can overcome the challenges that confront us and create a more just, inclusive, and sustainable global community.
As we celebrate this day and come ever closer to the end of 2023, let’s reignite our commitment to working together for the common good, recognising that our strength lies in unity.
